LEANING

PROJECT

The drone development team at University of Pisa

What is LEANING PROJECT

WHAT IS
LEANING PROJECT

LeanIng Project is the University of Pisa team whose aim is to design and build RC aircraft models for participation in international competitions in the DBF (Design, Build and Fly) category.

Established in 2020 and supported since 2023 with university funding, this initiative primarily targets engineering students and aims to create a space for common growth through the utilization of skills acquired during their studies and teamwork.

Participation in competitions serves as a means to stimulate creativity in solving the ever-changing challenges imposed by regulations each year, channeling this collective effort into the pursuit of innovation. Furthermore, it provides new motivation and insights for improvement through comparison with other competing teams.

It's a dynamic reality, and it will continue to advance thanks to the spirit and enthusiasm of the students, who, both now and in the past, represent the true driving force of the project.

D REAM

"To design" first means "to conceive," to give shape to what initially is just a set of requirements and objectives.

Therefore, the first step that team members are called to take is precisely to "dream," to think about what could be and to have the ambition to set important goals.

Creativity and intuition play a fundamental role in the early stages of a project like this, and exercising these skills entails significant development of problem-solving abilities, which are primary skills for an engineer of any kind.

SHAPE

The team's work, however, does not stop here, and the subsequent challenges that must be faced cast the entire project in a new light, that of the intersection between theory and practice, between design and the actual construction of the drone.

To approach this phase correctly, the work must be as interdisciplinary as possible across different sectors, highlighting the multidisciplinarity of the activity that team members are called to perform, and emphasizing the importance of dialogue and programming within the team.

Another thing that develops over time is team spirit, along with the friendships and enjoyment that result, other fundamental elements for a successful project that brings benefits from all perspectives to the team members.

FLY

This word cannot be replaced by any other, as it contains all the meanings that we can find in our activity, which arise from this desire and materialize in this action.

The first time the aircraft takes flight marks the beginning of flight tests, a necessary step to improve the aircraft as much as possible and prepare it in its best form for the competition.

Activity planning is also crucial in this phase, due to the need to test the aircraft's performance under every condition that may be encountered in the competition.

Therefore, the competition serves both as the means and the end, representing the conclusion of the ongoing project and the beginning of the next, towards new challenges and new takeoffs!
